Medical Intervention Instructions

It is common for pets to experience stress-related illness during their stay. No matter how hard we try to keep them comfortable, there is no place like home. 

We have created the following form to allow us to balance keeping you informed as a pet-parent and providing you with a stress-free experience while they are away from home. Rest assured that if any situation is considered to be an emergency, or immediate threat to one of our guests, our policy is to immediately bring them to a veterinary facility for treatment, as time is of the essence. 

For each potential clinical sign we will have options for each of the following occurrences

• First Occurence - The first time the symptom is observed 
• Occasional - One or fewer episodes every two days 
• Frequent - Up to one episode daily, with breaks of normality in between
• Persistent - 3-5 episodes in a single day, worsening signs, or 5+ days of frequent signs 

The options available at any or all of these stages will be: 

• Close Monitoring - Withhold intervention and continue to monitor for persistent or worsening signs
• Non-Prescription Intervention - Administer non-prescription therapies that are available only through veterinary facilities and can help resolve mild cases of certain illnesses (fees apply) 

• Hill’s Science Diet I/D - Veterinary formulated, fully-balanced diet for GI sensitivity
• Proviable Forte - This is a Digestive Health Supplement consisting of a probiotic combined with anti-diarrheal ingredients that also contain some anti-toxin properties

• Due to scheduling and availability limitations of many practices in the area, we ask that owner’s create the appointment to their discretion. 
• Same-day appointments (Mon-Sat) are ALWAYS available for Orchid Island Dog Spa guests at Mermaid Vet Hospital (with no transport fees!) if your preferred veterinarian is not available.
• We ask that you remain available by phone during the appointment to make treatment decisions and associated payments with your veterinarian. 

Contact Owner - Our desire is to keep you as informed as possible, but as pet-owners ourselves, understand that each pet is unique and may have certain quirks while they are away that are well documented and not of concern. You have the option to be contacted more or less frequently depending on what is observed and what is common for your pet.
